>> and a live look at the sparkling bay bridge on the first day of july, friday, july 1st, this is "today in the bay." >> good morning. thank you for being with us. darkened early. it's 5:00 on your friday. i'm marla tellez in for laura garcia-cannon. christina loren, a busy lady today. she's on traffic and of course weather patrol. good morning. >> good morning to you. and of course patriotic patrol as well. we have a big holiday coming up. one of my favorite holidays. the weather plays such a key role in the fourth of july. everybody wants to know the forecast. i've got that coming up. for today, we're already warming up. big ridge of high pressure situated out in the pacific, is going to drift toward the bay area. so today we're talking about 90s inland, triple-digit weather on the way. we'll get to that. mike has the day off. he's taking a much-needed break. let's look at your traffic right

now taking a look at the bay bridge. a little bit slow westbound on the bay bridge, not too bad though the metering lights are off, they will probably stay off for the next hour at least as it's slow out there. we have no accidents to report so we're off to a great start this morning of a holiday weekend. we'll keep updating you. back to you, marla. >> thanks, christina. a one-day strike by ticket takers shut down all golden gate ferry service between marin and san francisco this morning. today in the bay's damian trujillo is live in larkspur with the impacts. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this ferry will be here for the rest of the day. you mentioned those ticket agents, they are on their one-day strike, their contract expired at midnight and they are unhappy over the contract negotiations so they are holding a one-day strike. that means there will be no ferry service as you mentioned, into san francisco from saw is a

lee ta or from the larks spur ferry station. it lasts until 10:00 p.m. so the weekend ferry service will resume tomorrow, saturday. but for commuters today the golden gate bus service is adding several buses here and in saucesalito to get the golden ge transit service says it has had good faith negotiations with the union so they are surprised by today's action. we did witness the interaction between one of the workers with the transit service and with a commuter. he asked if he got in the city via the bus service if that bus service was going to bring him back, the worker told him that's a good question, we don't know that yet. mary is with the transit service is around the parking lot here. we're going to talk to her for you tonight or this morning at 5:30. live in los angeles spur. i'm damian trujillo "today in the bay." >> we'll look forward to that. thank you.

5:02. a bay area moth ser suing the san francisco police department claiming she was a victim of police brutality while pushing her baby 18 stroller. she was walking down the street when police approached her. she had been drinking, admitted to the police she was drunk and then was placed under arrest. this cell phone video shows what happened. you can see police trying to put her inside the car, and then her falling onto the ground face first. >> grabbed me by the throat and slammed me face first into the cement. >> it looked like he was gaining his balance and it was either she went down or he went down. she was the one that initiated it. >> former san francisco police chief doesn't believe the officers used excessive force. bright says her mother-in-law called the police in the first place.

>> san francisco's city attorney is stepping into the legal fight over a ban on circumcision set to go before voters in november. the city attorney's office says the ban would be patently unconstitutional if a court exempts medical professionals from. the brief builds on a group that says the state, it new city can regulate medical professionals. the propose measure would ban and criminalize the practice of circumcision on children. >> taxes are at the heart after lawsuit filed against contra costa county. the plaintiffs say that contra costa county is making them repay taxes they never got. the dispute over $18 million that the county owes chevron due to the assessment board decision last year that the county had over assessed the refinery between 2004 and '07. the counties say they never got the money and shouldn't have to pay anything.

>> this morning some east bay cities are clamping down on illegal fireworks. today in the bay's christie smith is live in oakland where officials say if you get caught it's going to cost you big. good morning. >> reporter: that's exactly right. nearly 300 communities will allow safe and sane fireworks. calfire reminds people you need use them in the area where you bought them. you take them to a city like oakland and the whole thing becomes illegal. this is one of the fire stations here in oakland where they have collection bins set up for people to turn in fireworks. police and fire will be patrolling looking for illegal fireworks around the city. we have video of someone shooting fireworks toward a b.a.r.t. train, something you don't want to do. it's not just potentially dangerous but people caught with fireworks can be fined up to $1,000, large quantities can get you jail time and fines up to 5

to $10,000. of course there's also the issue of fireworks safety. it can start fires. fire danger very high this year. it's going to be hot and humid. it can burn hands and legs. in some places you can use the safe and sane ones, san mateo and santa cruz counties, safe and sane fireworks are okay. in capitola and watsonville, pacifica and san bruno, and alameda county they can be used at ala me ta creek park, emerald glenn park, also in certain places in union city and newark. i mentioned this is one of the fire stations in oakland. you can turn in fireworks. they have collection bins. and coming up ai'll give you several locations where you can turn them in. christie smith, today in the bay. >> getting caught not worth it. thanks. >> the fourth of july holiday can be a tough weekend for military families with loved

ones in the war zone. they are missing their daughter rebecca. the army deployed her in may. she had to leave her 6-month-old son anthony home with her husband in colorado. they raised rebecca in los ga s gatos. >> we're here basically to acknowledge them, to just say thank you. maybe it's because they never did it for our guys way back in the 60s. >> everything that the towns people are doing for us, it is a good thing and not only our daughter but all of the troops should be celebrated. >> operation yellow ribbon of los gatos is organizing care package deliveries and compiling a list of soldiers away from home. the names will be read and families honored on the fourth around noon on the los gatos high school lawn.

>> 5:07. you made to the friday. congratulations. christina loren joins us with a look at your holiday forecast. >> good morning to you. yes, we have a holiday weekend. it's arrived and the weather is going to feel very summer like as we expect this time of year. we're looking good. i'm covering traffic for you this morning as well so i can gladly tell you weather's not impacting your commute at all. we expect some of the fog to roll in. as we head through the 6:00 hour, mostly toward the coast we have high pressure building in very, very strong. and still, some of that leftover moisture from all of the rain we picked up on tuesday so i think we'll see a little bit of that compression and fog formation as we head through 6, 7, probably 8:00. after that, though, we are going to clear out mostly sunny conditions, 75 gorgeous degrees in the city of san francisco. right now 55. 54 in oakland, 54 san mateo. at about noon, 60 degrees in the

city, as we head through 4:00 p.m., temperatures will keep climbing. a gorgeous day. i think you'll be toasty, though, if you live inland, livermore, concord, temperatures very, very warm as of noon. 86 degrees as you break for lunch in livermore. 67 in santa cruz at noon. as you can see here from your contour map we're going to see the cloud cover lingering as you break for lunch. but that's going to keep it nice and cool. if you're looking for better weather you want to talk the dog, take a jog, might want to head to the coast. 75 in san francisco versus 91 in fairfield. and the temps keep climbing throughout this holiday weekend. 92 in los gatos. i have that seven-day outlook coming up. we're going to talk about with fireworks time, what weather you can expect when you see those fireworks in your city. mike's getting a much-needed break. we're covering traffic for him. holiday weekend. let's go request ahead and look

efforts known as qe-2. asian markets rose on the back of our gains, europe is relatively flat but we get a little data out this morning on manufacturing, construction spending and consumer sentiment. to recap the market action the dow rising for the fourth straight session, 152 points yesterday to close at 12,414. the nasdaq composite added 33 to 2773. automakers report june sales this afternoon. j.d. powers says sales cooled off but sales should rise about 2% from may when supply issues from japan and a spike in vehicle prices. the bankrupt book store chain agreed to sell itself to the jafy companies for $215 million. the jafy owns the book club of the month, the double day company and columbia house. the final chapter hasn't entirely been written.

it offers a bid so leaves the door open for a short-term search for higher offers. those are the latest headlines. >> restaurants are banned from using styrofoam starting today in hayward. it's the the latest city to enact a ban. five others including oakland, fremont and emeryville have bans. berkeley put its ban in place 20 years ago. way ahead of the curve there. 5:16. we'll check that forecast with christina loren looking hot this weekend. >> yes. especially inland. we have a big ridge of high pressure that's going to warm temperatures up. but if you live near the water boy, you're paying for it. you'll luck out this weekend. we've got gorgeous weather at the coast. 75 degrees in the city of san francisco, happy friday to you. as you can see we've got mostly clear conditions right now. as we head through the next couple of hours we expect fog to

creep back in near the coast. we'll watch that for you. 58 degrees in livermore, 56 in sunnyvale, 55 in the city and 54 up in santa rosa. a gorgeous start. completely clear conditions. it's nice and comfortable. by noon you're rolling down the window or turning on the ac as you break for lunch. temperatures will climb. 86 in livermore, at noon 74 in san mateo and 77 degrees in san rafael. 80 later todaysh that's the forecasted high in oakland. down right warm elsewhere. 92 degrees even in gilroy. here it is, your seven-day outlook. looking pretty good except if you live in the hottest cities, morgan hill i'm forecasting 105 degrees on sunday. the warmest day in the extended period. i also think that livermore, concord, you'll be in the triple digits. elsewhere, close to that century mark so you want to make sure

officially retired yesterday. the 73-year-old will be the second oldest person to serve as defense secretary. only donald rumsfeld was older. he retired at age 74. >> and emergency landing in arizona overnight, airport officials say a southwest airlines jetliner kag 139 people made a safe emergency landing in phoenix after one of its two engines failed. the plane was en route from el paso to phoenix. they say the boeing 737 landed just fine and no one was hurt. >> many people are staying close because of the price of gas. that cooksouth going to cost you more. the national retail federation says the cost is up 12% from $54 last year to $61 this year. charcoal, lighter fluid and propane all cost a little more. even the price of beer has gone up due in part to a worldwide

this is "today in the bay." >> good morning. thank you for being with us on this friday morning. i'm marla tellez in for laura garcia-cannon. christina loren of course, what is she doing, checking the forecast, looking good right now. >> it really is. you saw from the live picture of the bay bridge, the only cloud cover we have out there right now is hugging the coast. it hasn't moved on shore just yesterd yet. i don't think it will penetrate all that deep inland, we'll keep watching that all morning long. the weather story this weekend, hot, hot, hot. as we head through the fourth of july, it's going to be abnormally warm for this time of year. we'll talk about how hot it's expected to be just be aware you'll want to drink lots of water as you celebrate. let's get to your traffic this morning. mike's got the day off.

i'm doing double duty. light now except for one area, 237 eastbound, a little on the slow side. give yourself five extra minutes. a live look at 87/287 interchange. look how light it is on the parkway. traffic here looking good. might be that time to get out of town if you're trying to do so. >> friday light. thanks, christina. 5:30. some east bay cities are on the lookout for illegal fireworks. christie smith is live where officials say if you get caught it's going to cost you. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. illegal fireworks have been a real challenge for the city of oakland for sometime. often in the days leading up to the fourth of july you can hear chorus of loud booms. as you said that can cost you. fireworks are illegal in the

city of oakland. we have some youtube video of people shooting fireworks toward a b.a.r.t. train, something you don't want to do. the fire department is teaming up with the oakland police department going to be patrolling, not only looking for fireworks but things like reckless driving and unruly crowds. the fire for being caught with fireworks. up to $1,000. if you've got a large stash that can include jail time and fines up to 5,000 to $10,000. it can be dangerous with burns to your face and legs and hands. especially in the hands of children. to get illegal fireworks off the streets oakland saet up throughout the city. they cloud the 1400 block of 14th street t 1200 block of east 14th, 1700 block of 50th avenue. and the 1400 block of 98th

avenue. those are all fire stations ready to take those fireworks. if you want to drop them off. there is a tip line that is in several languages if you want to give a tip about someone who has illegal fireworks, that's 510-777-8814. they will be read the take your call. live in oakland, christie smith, today in the bay. >> if you use safe and sane fireworks this weekend there are a few ground rules. first, make sure your city allows you to use them. they are smaller fireworks that do not explode or dart across the ground or fly through the air. you need to buy them from licensed stands and check to make sure they have the state fire marshal's seal. use them outdoors. stay away from dry grass and flammables. have a bucket or hose nearby. do not try to fix a fireworks that does not work on the first

try. and kids should never be allowed to use fireworks. berkeley schools are cracking down on students who bring guns to school. the school board will offer education for students and add new hall monitors who will look for suspicious activity at school entrances. this is at berkeley high school and berkeley academy. the board decided against installing metal detectors and dropped the ideas of closing berkeley high at lunch. a total of seven were arrested and expelled for bringing guns to school in six separate incidents. barely beating that deadline w. a few hours to spare oakland leaders agreed on a new budget. the council pass add budget before midnight that will impact the next two years. it closes a $58 million deficit. much relies on sweeping

concessions from city workers. the unions must vote on those so if they don't agree it means the city must find another way to make ends meet. a worker strike might leave many scrambling because this will be no ferry service from larkspur and sausalito today. damian trujillo is live where commuters are stuck in the middle of this one-day strike. good morning, damion. >> reporter: good morning. there is mass confusion. turns out there will be commuter service via the ferry service into the city. we got a news release from the ticket agents last night saying they were going on a one day strike. everybody came out to make sure everything was going to good smoothly. it turns out that strike has been called off. let me bring in mary for the golden gate consit. what's going on? >> yes, there will be golden gate service.

the inland boat man's union did say they were going to strike today. into the evening they started back pedalling on that and you know, we didn't want to say last night that we were going to run informs until we were here on the ground and had a vessel master reporting that the pilot the boat, the deck and thes. we didn't want to trust the word because we weren't told by the inland boatsmen union they were going to strike. a little bit of a disconnect. it's an inconvenience for the customer but we're running service today and will be back at the table as we have been with the union and see if we can resolve the issues, over seven ticket sales positions, the board policy was adopted those would be eliminated because we have technology that the new machines that sell the tickets,

and we did make -- have on the table we'll find other jobs for these people in our organization. >> bottom line this will sail out of here. >> we'll go right on schedule and hopefully we'll be table to sail on through the day. >> mary curry. might be a scarce crowd because the parking lot is kind of empty. a lot of people probably got alternative plans. >> great news for commuters. thanks for that, damion. >> some transitingses are raising fees, hiking fees today on the bay bridge and all other six state-owned bridges in the bay area, tolls are going up for vehicles with more than two axles including big rigs and cars towing boats. the transportation agency is raising prices on monthly prices, $2 more for an adult, $1

more for seniors and those with disabilities. cable cars jump from 5 to $6. and the parking pass will cost $2 more. caltrain will add to its base fair. there is no more life in the fast lane for people who drive hybrids. starting idea those stickers are no more. this means drivers have to stay in the regular lanes with the rest of us. the chp says there is no grace period for drivers who do not follow the rule. white ones for all electric cars and ones that run on compressed natural gas or hydrogen fuel cells. time to check that forecast. >> you make plans yet for the fourth of july? >> i'm going to see mom. i'm going to the north bay. >> nice. i hear they have a fabulous display. and we've got great displays across the bay area.

weather at about 8:35, firk time it's kind of toasty near the coast. we'll get to that in a minute. high pressure has built in today. the storm track that was taken into the bay area brought us record rainfall. you might remember tuesday, the thing of the past, high pressure has taken control of our weather pattern. it's going to bring our temperatures up for the next couple of days. san francisco clear. i'm noticing a little fog around the coast. but it's really not that bad this morning. we're starting out mostly skier across the board. it's going to be hot inland. when you're starting out clear the sun is coming up. the south bay and the east bay. it's going to be hot. warm near the coast. weekend temps climb through sunday. for the fourth of july sunset at about 8:35 p.m. so that's when we start to see the fireworks go off. in the 60s on the coast and 80s inland.

>> good morning. welcome back. here is a live look over san jose. a beautiful start to your friday, july 1st. it's 5:42. word this morning there might be a deal in the works to stop the federal government from defaulting on its bills in august. we're now getting an example of what could happen if there is not a deal. tracie potts is live in washington with the details. good morning. >> good morning. were you watching what happened overnight in minnesota? it's almost echoing some of what we're seeing here in washington.

democrats and republicans couldn't reach agreement, one side wanted to raise taxes, the other refused. minnesota's government shut down at midnight. hoping to prevent that here in washington. hoping to prevent a default on bills come august. the debt talks that don't seem to have progressed far, a little light at the end of the tunnel now. there's talk of a possible deal where we cut $1 trillion out of the budget for now, allowing the u.s. to borrow $1 trillion and not default on bills for at least seven more months. there was another scenario if they can come to a deal on $2 trillion in cuts we could prevent that default until the end of next year. here's the problem. some republicans want the whole deal the entire $4 trillion that they have been working for. they don't want to see a short-term deal. they think we need to deal with this entire thing as one big package. over the course of the last couple of days the tone has

changed a bit. president obama you heard criticizing congress saying you don't need to take a break, stay here and deal with this. now we've seen back lash from republicans who say it's not us. don't complain that we're not here. it's the the president who is failing to lead so. the tone turning nasty as they try to work out this deal and avoid a default. >> thanks, tracy. 5:44. all of that sierra snowsmelt making parts of yosemite dangerous. two hikers are dead after they were swept into the reservoir. gregory meyer and richard fox were returning from a hiking trip when they fell in. three other hikers crossing the bridge were not hurt. the bridge is open to the public. rangers say water levels are higher than usual.
